Services

Student Services Provision

Student Services is a dedicated area which can provide advice, guidance and support to students
within the College. A professional team of staff work together to support students so that they can
successfully complete their course and recognise pathways to progress on to after leaving College,
for example Higher Education, careers and employment. Support given is wide ranging and any
problems experienced by students during their course, either personal or academic, will be
addressed as quickly as possible.

Counselling Support

Some students, whilst studying, may experience emotional and personal issues that need
to be shared with a qualified Counsellor. Penwith College offers a professional counselling
service to students to explore situations causing concern.

Welfare support

If you are in need of support during your time as a student, your Tutor may be able to help you.

If you prefer you can drop into the Student Services area to talk through your issues. Support is offered on a wide range of issues including benefits and finance, health issues, stress and anxiety, or any other personal problem. There is also a range of leaflets to choose from for information and advice on where to find help.

Careers Guidance

We have a commitment to offer informal, supportive, impartial and timely careers guidance to all students. Students have an entitlement to Careers Education and Guidance from Tutors and Course Lecturers, Programme Team Leaders and the Careers Advisor. We also work in close partnership with Connexions Careers Advisors, who visit Tutor Groups and conduct individual interviews with students. Students have the opportunity to discuss their personal progression routes and receive support in making decisions appropriate to their needs. You will fi nd a range of careers literature and software available in the Student Services area and in the Learning Resource Centre.

Childcare

It is important that you seek advice from Student Services regarding fees for childcare as some help may be available to you.

College Nursery Provision

Penwith College has nursery facilities situated on site and at the Lescudjack Centre.

The Nursery has OFSTED Registration and cares for children aged from three months to five years who can be given full, part or sessional care provision. All staff are qualified to at least Level 3 in childcare and education. Some funded places may be available. Please contact the Nursery on 01736 335137 for more information.

Truro and Penwith College has received matrix accreditation. This is the national quality standard for any organisation that delivers information, advice and guidance on learning and work.

Travel Bursaries

The College does help some students towards the cost of travel to College. Any student who requires assistance in this way should contact Student Services.

Travel

Subsidised travel should be available to full-time students under the age of 19 years who live in the Penwith area beyond three miles of the College. Other students may qualify for this benefit.

Maintenance Allowance

The National EMA Scheme is in place for this academic year. It is to help you attend College and to help with the costs associated with your course. There is also an adult scheme for students between the age of 19 and 31 years old. This award is called the ALG (Adult Learning Grant).

Learner Support Fund

This fund is to help students in a situation of hardship. Applicants are means-tested. Forms will be available from Student Services at the beginning of the autumn term.
